Jamaican NGOs sue over two bauxite concessions

According to BNAmericas, Jamaican environmental and community organizations plan to file a lawsuit against two new bauxite mining permits in court.

Local media report that the Office of the Public Defender will provide legal assistance to stakeholders in two areas: Puerto Bueno Mountain in the Dry Harbour Mountains of St. Ann Parish and the Cockpit Country National Forest Park. The aim is to halt mining activities in these locations through the Constitutional Court.

Despite the National Environment and Planning Agency previously rejecting environmental permits, government authorities issued mining permits to Jamaica World LLC in the Puerto Bueno area, a threatened biodiversity habitat.

The call by NGOs National Integrity Action and the Jamaica Environment Trust to Cancel the government decision is supported by the opposition People's National Party.

Local Cockpit Country NGOs and residents also oppose the approval of Noranda Bauxite Jamaica's bauxite mining operations in the area.

The Jamaica National Heritage Trust, following an assessment, also warned that open-pit mining would cause irreparable damage to the Community and affect the Cockpit Country's bid for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The mining permits are outside the protected area, where mining has been prohibited since 2017.

An environmental impact assessment shows that bauxite mining in the Cockpit Country could significantly boost Jamaica's economy, but also poses risks to the ecologically fragile area.
